Programmes in Latin

Listening to BBC Radio 3 the other day, I was wondering why I couldn't seem to understand what was going on. It took me a matter of minutes to figure out I was listening to a programme entirely in Latin.

This seems to be a very bad idea, and someone should have realised this before I did and stopped it. The amount of people fluent in Latin as a spoken language must be very few, considering that not many schools currently teach it and even for the older generation it was primarily taught as written word, so the audience for this programme must be very small and its value as a programme to draw an audience limited. If it was intended to aid those studying latin, why not transmit it as part of the selection of learning programmes that the BBC produces. The only other reasons I can see are either as a time filler (why not play a long piece of Bach or something) or for pseudo-intellectual credit (how fucking obscene!).

Why won't people think about these things before they go and do something stupid?!
